Forty years ago, Dean Smith's North Carolina Tar Heels led by Bob McAdoo made it to the Final Four. They faced an upstart Florida State team. The winner would face the winner of the UCLA-Louisville winner, which turned out to be the Bruins. This was towards the end of the John Wooden dynasty years.
North Carolina featured McAdoo, who was Dean Smith's first ever Junior College Transfer. He led the team in scoring at 19.5 points per game and rebounding at 10.1 a game. McAdoo went on to a long and successful professional career. Dennis Wuycik averaged 18.0 a game. Also on this team was a young Bobby Jones who went on to play for the Philadelphia 76er's and a gutsy kid named George Karl. Bill Chamberlain was a solid contributor who also averaged double figures.
The Heels fell short in this game but thanks to an old ESPN documentary, here are some very good highlights of this very good UNC team, 4 decades ago. Of course, 10 years later, things were a little different as Dean Smith won his first National Championship behind James Worthy, Sam Perkins and a kid named Mike Jordan. Enjoy the highlights.
