Bryn Renner threw for 226 yards and 4 touchdown passes while Giovani Bernard rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tar Heels to a 35-20 victory over East Carolina on Saturday. North Carolina moves to 4-1 on the season.

The defense forced 4 turnovers and Carolina capitalized early as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held a halftime advantage of 28-3. The Pirates tried to rally scoring the next 10 points and cut the lead to 28-13 in the third quarter but the game belonged to the Tar Heels who were able to stem the tide in the 4th quarter.

North Carolina got a 1-2 punch in the receiving corps with Erik Highsmith grabbing 3 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown while Dwight Jones caught 5 for 89 yards and a touchdown.

The Pirates aired it out as Dominique Davis went 40 for 57 with 414 yards and 2 touchdowns but was picked off twice.

Carolina will host Louisville next Saturday in their last out of conference game before jumping firmly into conference play the rest of the way.
