North Carolina played from behind all day against East Carolina on Saturday. The Tar Heel defense struggled to get the Pirates off the field and gave up a whopping 55 points in Kenan Stadium.

The Carolina defensive woes are a trend that needs to change to right the ship and salvage a season that is going in the wrong direction.

The North Carolina defense has given up 32.5 points a game thus far this season. On Saturday, the Heels gave up 603 total yards in the game.

The Pirates played downhill most of the game, popping off big yardage on first down.

Head Coach Larry Fedora, currently has co-defensive coordinators in Dan Disch and Ron Cook, who both coach various parts of the defense as well. This begs the questions as to the effectiveness of having two defensive coordinators and should this duty fall under one? And is either one the right choice for defensive coordinator or should one be brought in allowing for each to coach their specific part of the defense, relieving some of the responsibility?

Clearly, there is a lot of finger pointing at the moment and there are some tough choices to be made on the defensive side of the ball, going forward. But one thing is for certain, the defense has taken a step backward after a sample size of four games this season. There are 8 games remaining to improve.

The Tar Heels are 1-3 and will face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Saturday.
