Field Hockey Splits Two Games Over Weekend
The Tar Heel Field Hockey team took their second loss of the season on Friday to top ranked Maryland, in overtime. They followed the loss up with a solid 4-0 victory over California.
On Friday, the 3rd ranked Heels hosted the Terps in a big ACC clash and UNC jumped out to the early lead on a Malma Malmberg goal at the 47:25 mark. Malmberg capitalized on a rebound to put North Carolina in the lead.
But it was too much Jill Witmer in the game The Maryland starter scored at the 62 minute mark and followed that up with the game winner at the 75th minute. It was her 8th and 9th goals of the season.
The Tar Heels out shot the Terps 9-6. Both teams had 3 penalty corners in the game.
On Sunday, North Carolina rebounded nicely against the Cal Bears, 4-0. The win snapped a two game losing streak.
Nina Notman scored on a penalty corner just 4 minutes into the contest. Loren Shealy followed that up with a rebound at the 35 minute mark.
The Tar Heels scored two more goals in the second half, as Samantha Travers and Lauren Moyer added to the total.
Carolina moves to 9-2 on the season and will travel to Winston-Salem next, to face Wake Forest on Saturday.
