North Carolina won the first ever game played on the deck of an aircraft carrier, defeating Michigan State 67-55. The Heels overcame poor shooting and Michigan State offensive rebounding to win the first ever Carrier Classic.
John Henson had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 8 blocked shots while Harrison Barnes poured in 17 points on the night.
Carolina jumped out to a 6-0 start only to fall behind primarily because of the Spartans offensive rebounding early on. But the Heels were able to chance the pace to a more up and down style and took the lead with 5:06 left in the first half and never trailed again.
The Tar Heels stretched the lead out to as much as 20 points midway through the second half but got sloppy and let Michigan State creep back in the game.
Carolina shot 48% for the game and held the Spartans to 30% on the night. Michigan State out rebounded the Tar Heels by a 39-30 margin.
Dexter Strickland finished with 10 points while Tyler Zeller chipped in 9 on the night.
The Heels are next in action on Sunday at UNC-Asheville.
