The Top ranked Tar Heels fell to Maryland in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship on Sunday. The Terps take the title with a 3-2 overtime thriller. The tables were turned on North Carolina who fought back from a 3 goal deficit on Friday in the semifinals against Connecticut. In that one, Carolina won in overtime.

Maryland's Jill Witmer scored the game winner in the 81st minute after the Terrapins tied the game in regulation with no time left to send it to overtime.

It was Maryland's 8th all time championship in the sport, Carolina fell short of their 7th on Sunday.

Senior, Elizabeth Stephens scored both Tar Heel goals. It was a repeat of last year's National Championship where Maryland won on an overtime goal in the 98th minute.

The Tar Heels finish the season at 23-2. On Monday, Katelyn Falgowski, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Caitlin Van Sickle were named to the National All-America first team while Katie Ardrey was named to the third team as voted on by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
