UNC fall to Hokies
North Carolina fell behind by 17 to the 8th ranked Hokies but a strong comeback fell just short and Virginia Tech defeated the Tar Heels 24-21
The victory clinches the Coastal division for the Hokies as Logan Thomas threw for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for a touchdown on the night.
The Tar Heels actually jumped out to a 7-0 lead and were driving for a second score when Ryan Houston coughed up the football inside the Hokie 5 yard line. Giovani Bernard was injured in the first half and did not return to complicate things for the North Carolina running game. Bernard was hit helmet-to-helmet and showed signs of a possible concussion .
North Carolina fought back however, cutting the Hokies lead to 3 with 2:32 left in the game. Ryan Houston powered the football in and it was obvious that the Heels would attempt an onside kick. They recovered but the ball did not travel the required 10 yards and Virginia Tech was awarded the football.
Carolina finished with more total yards 358-340 and it was a good night for quarterback Bryn Renner who threw for 224 yards and a touchdown. Dwight Jones caught 6 passes for 105 yards while Erik Highsmith racked up 90 receiving yards.
Despite the injury, Giovani Bernard has eclipsed the 1000 rushing mark for the season while Dwight Jones has passed the mark receiving.
North Carolina falls to 6-5 and 2-5 in the conference and will look to better their bowl position with a win against Duke next week at Kenan Stadium.
