North Carolina defeated Virginia on Friday, 11-9 and will move on to face Duke in the ACC Title Game on Sunday in Men's Lacrosse.
Marcus Holman scored three times while Joey Sankey scored twice to lead the Tar Heels against the higher seeded Cavs in Charlottesville. Steven Rastivo saved 7 in goal for North Carolina. North Carolina won despite Virginia's Steele Stanwich who scored twice and had 5 assists in the game.
It was a tight game throughout tied at 4 at the half. Carolina had a one goal lead going into the fourth but opened up a 4 goal lead before Virginia scored 2 late to close the gap.
Virginia out shot the Tar Heels 41-29 and won more ground balls by a 38-31 margin but Carolina was efficient with their shooting.
R.G. Keenan won 11 of 21 face offs in the game.
The 9th ranked Tar Heels will face Duke, the top seed on Sunday at 3pm. It is the second time the Heels have made it to the Championship Game since 1996.
The Women followed suit on Saturday defeating Virginia 14-6 and will meet Maryland for the ACC Title on Monday. Becky Lynch scored three times for the 3rd ranked Tar Heels. The Terps are 4th in the Nation. The game will be televised on ESPNU at 7pm.
