Tyler Zeller scored 31 and North Carolina pulled away from Appalachian State on their way to a 97-82 victory on Saturday night,
With 4:30 left in the first half, the Mountaineers cut the Tar Heel lead to just 2 before a run put the game out of reach as Carolina extended their lead to as many as 27 in the second half.
John Henson chipped in 17 points to go along with Zeller's total. Zeller also grabbed 10 rebounds on the night. Reggie Bullock and P.J. Hairston both had 10 on the night as Harrison Barnes was held to his lowest total of the year at 9. Kendall Marshall was a floor general with 13 assists while just committing 2 turnovers.
North Carolina shot 54.5% on the night and out rebounded Appalachian State by 6. The Tar Heels did struggle behind the 3 point line going only 2-10 on the game.
It was the first time back to the Smith Center as head coach for former Tar Heel, Jason Capel, who is in his 2nd season as head man of the Mountaineers. Omar Cook lead App. State with 21 points on the night.
The outing got mixed reviews by Head Coach, Roy Williams, "We were really good for about the last four minutes of the first half and the first 4-5 minutes of the second half...And then we went brain dead there for a while."
The Heels improved to 9-2 on the season and will continue a stretch of three games in 5 days. They face Nichols State on Monday and Texas on Wednesday, both at home as part of a 9 game home stand.
